Canine Health Foundation Research Project - Grant #372

Thyroid Study to determine what is the normal thyroid hormone value for the Alaskan Malamute. Funded by AMRF.

We want you to help us find out!

"Do Alaskan Malamutes really have slightly lower thyroid values than most other breeds? To find out, The Alaksan Malamute Research Foundation (AMRF) is funding a study under CHF grant # 372 to determine normal reference ranges for thyroid function. At this years  National Specialty, the AMCA Breeder Education and Health committees are jointly offering a Thyroid Clinic on the afternoon of Thursday, November 3. Researchers will be testing 100 healthy malamutes between the ages of 1 and 8 years. You can help! Those participating will receive, at no charge, the following:

  • full thyroid panel

  • complete blood count (CBC)

  • blood chemistry

  • urinalysis

  • physical exam

Please plan to participate! A couple of minutes from you could help to solve this mystery and prevent unnecessary and dangerous medical treatments.

Instructions

Please fill out one registration form per dog (form is in the newsletter as well as in pdf format on this website). Dogs must meet the following requirements:

  • between the ages of 1 and 8 years

  • no history or clinical sign of thyroid or other disorders

  • not taking any medications (past 6 months) or supplements (past 45 days) other than heartworm or flea/tick preventative

  • AKC registered or other evidence of purebred status

  • not pregnant

If your dog does not meet the requirements following the physical exam and general health screening (CBC, urinalysis, and chemistry), samples from your dog will not be tested for thyroid hormone values. Please do your best to bring only healthy dogs that meet the above criteria. Medications and supplements may effect thyroid homone values and must be avoided for the purposes of this study.
