Alaskan Malamute Club of America
The AKC Parent Breed Club for the Alaskan Malamute

The Working Dog Showcase is your opportunity to present your working malamute in a national forum for everyone to appreciate. The Showcase is limited to those dogs with demonstrated working ability, as indicated by the achievement of a minimum of two AMCA working dog titles, or one regular title and at least one leg of an Excellent title. The titles must have been issued (not still pending) at the time of the show, so start getting your paperwork together and send it in now! See the Working Dog Program for more information on working titles.

Neutered dogs are welcome in this event, and males and females compete equally. The dogs are evaluated by each of three judges using the working committee’s point schedule. This is a great opportunity to find out how your dogs look to some of the most experienced animal professionals around.

Judges

  • Ray Coppinger, Ph.D.

Ray mushed competitively for twelve years on the northeastern racing circuit. During that time, he blended his recreational activity with his profession, and began to study why various types of sled dogs had differing abilities. His research resulted in the publication of several papers on sled dog biology. Since then, he has made a career of studying dogs of all kinds, producing many publications on canine physiology, evolution, and behavior. He is the co-author, with his wife Lorna Coppinger, of the popular book Dogs: A Startling New Understanding of Canine Origin, Behavior & Evolution (2001). He teaches biology at Hampshire College in Massachusetts.

  • Leif Erickson

Leif has been mushing for the past 20 years and is showing no signs of stopping. He primarily breeds and runs malamutes (Apple Hill Malamutes), but he has also run Siberians and Alaskans. Like most drivers of “big dogs,” Leif favors freight races, mid-distance races, distance races and the occasional camping trip. In addition to being a knowledgeable dog man, Leif is also a gifted horseman. As a farrier, he is in great demand to work on horses that no one else will touch. He has a great eye for sound structure and movement, whether the animal is measured in inches or in hands.

  • Twila Baker

Twila began her life in malamutes by asking hers to work. Breeding and showing came later, and she has been doing both for nearly a decade. She has good reason to care about exactly what it takes to make a reliable sled dog. An accomplished outdoorswoman, Twila puts 1500 to 2000 miles per year on her own malamute team by cart and sled. Her passion for the outdoors and the solitude of the wilderness has led to many extended winter sledding excursions and summer hiking trips with her dogs. For nine years, Twila managed a veterinary practice and worked as a veterinary technician. She recently opened her own doggy day care/training center/grooming salon in Vancouver, Washington.
